Sentence Structure & です

SOV order and the copula

Japanese is SOV (verb last)

The verb or copula ends the sentence.

💬 Examples
私は学生です。
Watashi wa gakusei desu.
I am a student.
📝 Topic ... です at the end
田中さんは先生です。
Tanaka-san wa sensei desu.
Mr. Tanaka is a teacher.
📝 Predicate + です last
です is the polite copula ('is/am/are')

It links the subject to a noun or adjective.

💬 Examples
これは本です。
Kore wa hon desu.
This is a book.
📝 です = polite 'is'
元気です。
Genki desu.
I'm fine.
📝 です after a な-adjective
The plain form of です is だ

Casual speech uses だ (or nothing).

💬 Examples
学生だ。
Gakusei da.
(I'm) a student.
📝 だ = casual 'is'
猫だ!
Neko da!
It's a cat!
