Keigo: Honorific & Humble

尊敬語 and 謙譲語

Three levels of politeness

plain, polite (です/ます), and keigo (honorific/humble).

📊 Keigo verbs
Plain Honorific (尊敬) Humble (謙譲)
行く iku いらっしゃる 参る mairu
食べる taberu 召し上がる いただく
言う iu おっしゃる 申す mōsu
する suru なさる いたす itasu
💬 Examples
食べる → 食べます → 召し上がる
taberu → tabemasu → meshiagaru
eat (plain / polite / honorific)
📝 Rising politeness
する → します → なさる
suru → shimasu → nasaru
do (plain / polite / honorific)
📝 Honorific of する
尊敬語 (honorific) elevates the other person

Used for the listener and their actions.

💬 Examples
社長がいらっしゃいました。
Shachō ga irasshaimashita.
The president has arrived.
📝 いらっしゃる = honorific 'come/be'
お名前は何ですか。
Onamae wa nan desu ka.
What is your name? (polite)
📝 お- honorific prefix
謙譲語 (humble) lowers yourself

Used for your own actions toward others.

💬 Examples
田中と申します。
Tanaka to mōshimasu.
I am called Tanaka. (humble)
📝 申す = humble 'say'
資料をお送りします。
Shiryō o ookuri shimasu.
I will send the documents. (humble)
📝 お + verb stem + する = humble
