The indirect object

The dative marks the indirect object

'to / for whom'.

Gender Ending Example
masculine -у / -ю брату
feminine -а → -е маме
neuter -у окну
plural -ам / -ям детям
💬 Examples
Я даю книгу брату.
Ya dayu knigu bratu.
I give the book to (my) brother.
📝 брат → брату (dative recipient)
Я помогаю маме.
Ya pomogayu mame.
I help (my) mom.
📝 помогать takes the dative
Some verbs require the dative

помогать (help), звонить (call), нравиться (like).

Я звоню другу.
Ya zvonyu drugu.
I'm calling (my) friend.

Мне нравится Москва.
Mne nravitsya Moskva.
I like Moscow.
📝 мне = dative; 'Moscow is pleasing to me'
Dative for feelings (impersonal)
