Subordinate Clause Word Order

The verb goes to the end

Finite verb moves to the end

After a subordinating conjunction the conjugated verb is final.

💬 Examples
Ik blijf thuis omdat ik ziek ben.
I stay home because I am ill.
📝 ben at the end
Hij zegt dat hij komt.
He says that he is coming.
📝 komt at the end
Verb clusters stay together at the end

Two or more verbs cluster at the clause end.

💬 Examples
...dat ik moet werken.
...that I must work.
📝 moet werken cluster
...omdat ik gewerkt heb.
...because I have worked.
📝 participle + auxiliary at end
Main clause inverts after a sub-clause

If the sub-clause comes first, the main clause starts with its verb.

💬 Examples
Omdat ik ziek ben, blijf ik thuis.
Because I'm ill, I stay home.
📝 blijf ik (inversion)
Als het regent, neem ik een paraplu.
If it rains, I take an umbrella.
📝 neem ik after the comma
