The Verb 是 (to be)

Identity statements

是 links two nouns

是 means 'to be' for identity: A 是 B.

💬 Examples
我是老师。
Wǒ shì lǎoshī.
I am a teacher.
📝 Noun 是 Noun
这是书。
Zhè shì shū.
This is a book.
📝 是 for identity
Don't use 是 with adjectives

Adjectives are predicates on their own; use 很 instead of 是.

💬 Examples
我很高。
Wǒ hěn gāo.
I am tall.
📝 NOT 我是高 — use 很 + adjective
天气很好。
Tiānqì hěn hǎo.
The weather is good.
📝 No 是 before an adjective
Negate 是 with 不

不是 = 'is not'.

💬 Examples
我不是学生。
Wǒ bú shì xuésheng.
I am not a student.
📝 不 + 是
这不是我的。
Zhè bú shì wǒ de.
This is not mine.
