A Language Born from Latin

French is a Romance language that evolved from Vulgar Latin, the spoken form of Latin brought to Gaul by Roman soldiers and settlers during the first century BCE. Over centuries of isolation, political change, and cultural blending with Celtic and Germanic influences, the Latin spoken in northern France gradually transformed into Old French, which then evolved into the Middle French of the medieval period and eventually into the modern language we know today. French first gained official status in France through the Ordinance of Villers-Cotterêts in 1539, when King Francis I declared it the language of law and administration, replacing Latin — a landmark moment in the history of any European vernacular language.

The Language of Diplomacy and Culture

For several centuries, French was the dominant language of European diplomacy, aristocracy, and intellectual life. From the court of Versailles to the salons of the Enlightenment, French served as the lingua franca of educated society across the continent. The influence of French on English is immense — following the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, French became the language of the English ruling class for nearly three centuries, leaving behind thousands of words that remain in everyday English use today. Words such as government, justice, beauty, adventure, and cuisine all entered English directly from French, accounting for an estimated 30 percent of modern English vocabulary.

French is today one of the most geographically widespread languages on Earth. It is an official language in 29 countries across five continents, spoken across large parts of sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific, and Canada. The African continent is home to the largest and fastest-growing French-speaking population in the world, with projections suggesting that by 2050 the majority of the world's French speakers will live in Africa. French is also one of the six official languages of the United Nations and an official language of the European Union, NATO, the International Olympic Committee, and dozens of other major international organisations.

Structure, Elegance, and the Académie Française

French is renowned for its grammatical precision and its reputation as a language of clarity and elegance. It uses the Latin alphabet with several accents — the acute accent (é), the grave accent (è), the circumflex (ê), the cedilla (ç), and the diaeresis (ë) — each of which affects pronunciation or distinguishes between words. French nouns carry grammatical gender, either masculine or feminine, which influences the form of articles, adjectives, and pronouns throughout a sentence. The Académie Française, founded in 1635, is the world's oldest and most famous official body responsible for regulating a national language, reflecting the deep cultural importance the French place on the purity and integrity of their language.
