Urdu syntax: postpositional phrases

urdū naḥv: hurūf-e-iẓāfa

Postpositional phrases precede the verb in basic SOV order

maf'ūl bih ṣarīḥ vs ghair ṣarīḥ

Direct object: کتاب پڑھی; indirect object: مجھے کتاب دی

حروف ربط: اور لیکن مگر

Coordinating conjunctions

hurūf-e-rabt: aur lekin magar

اور (and), لیکن/مگر (but) — مگر slightly more literary

حروف عطف: پھر / تب / تو

Sequential connectors

hurūf-e-'aṭf: phir / tab / to

Sequencing words — پھر = then/again, تب = then (result)

حروف تعلیل: کیونکہ / چونکہ

Causal conjunctions

hurūf-e-ta'līl: kyoṃke / chūṃke

چونکہ = since (because) — more formal than کیونکہ

حروف غایت: تاکہ / تاکہ نہ

Purpose conjunctions

hurūf-e-ghāyat: tāke / tāke na

تاکہ + subjunctive = so that — negative: تاکہ نہ = so that not

حروف وصفی: جو / جس / جن

Relative conjunctions

hurūf-e-vaṣfī: jo / jis / jin

Relative pronouns introducing adjectival clauses

حروف ترقی: حتی کہ / بلکہ

Additive/scalar particles
