Genitive -s, Pronoun Cases & Word Order

Swedish's minimal case system: the genitive -s, subject/object pronoun forms and word order
Genitiv -s på hela frasen
Genitive -s attaches to the end of the whole noun phrase
-
Not just to the head noun, but to the entire phrase
kungens av Sveriges bil
the car of the king of Sweden (group genitive)
-
-s attaches at the very end of a longer noun phrase
min bok, inte *jags bok
possessive pronouns instead of genitive for pronouns
-
Pronouns use dedicated possessive forms, never -s
Jag gav henne boken.
I gave her the book. (double object, no preposition)
-
Indirect object comes first, with no preposition needed
till vs indirekt objekt utan preposition
till vs indirect object without preposition: two strategies
-
Both express the same recipient relationship differently
av, för, med, till, från
prepositions replacing most case functions
-
Small function words do the work case endings do elsewhere
Ingen dativ alls
No dative case at all (unlike German)
-
A clean structural contrast with German's four-case system
Adjektiv böjs aldrig för kasus
Case agreement is nonexistent for adjectives
-
Adjectives change for gender/number/definiteness, never case
med mig, till dig
object pronoun after a preposition
-
Prepositions always take the object pronoun form
Substantiv byter aldrig form för funktion
Nouns don't change form for grammatical function
except -s
The one narrow exception is the genitive -s suffix
