The narrative past

Weak verbs add -te

Regular past = stem + -te + endings.

Strong verbs change the vowel

Strong verbs form the past by an internal vowel change.

sein/haben Präteritum even in speech ich war / ich hatte
💬 Examples
gehen → ich ging
to go → I went
📝 Vowel change, no -te
sehen → ich sah
to see → I saw
📝 Strong past
war and hatte are used even in speech

sein and haben prefer the Präteritum.

💬 Examples
Ich war müde.
I was tired.
📝 war = simple past of sein
Ich hatte Zeit.
I had time.
📝 hatte = simple past of haben
