Konjunktiv I reports others' speech

Used (especially in journalism) to relay statements neutrally.

💬 Examples
Er sagt, er sei krank.
He says he is ill.
📝 sei = Konjunktiv I of sein
Sie sagt, sie habe keine Zeit.
She says she has no time.
📝 habe = Konjunktiv I
It signals distance from the claim

It shows the speaker is reporting, not vouching.

💬 Examples
Der Minister sagte, er werde zurücktreten.
The minister said he would resign.
📝 werde = reported future
Man sagt, das sei wahr.
They say that is true.
📝 sei reports a claim
Konjunktiv II substitutes when forms overlap

If Konjunktiv I looks like the indicative, switch to Konjunktiv II.

Sie sagen, sie hätten keine Zeit.
They say they have no time.

Er sagt, er käme später.
He says he'll come later.
