Object Agreement in the Perfective

Verb agrees with the object

With ने, the verb agrees with the OBJECT

Not with the subject.

💬 Examples
राम ने किताब पढ़ी
rām ne kitāb paṛhī
Ram read the book
📝 पढ़ी (f) agrees with किताब (f), not राम
राम ने खाना खाया
rām ne khānā khāyā
Ram ate food
📝 खाया (m) agrees with खाना (m)
A को-marked object gives default m.sg agreement

A को object can't trigger agreement.

💬 Examples
मैंने राम को देखा
maiṃne rām ko dekhā
I saw Ram
📝 देखा stays m.sg (object has को)
उसने लड़कियों को बुलाया
usne laṛkiyoṃ ko bulāyā
He called the girls
📝 बुलाया default m.sg
This is split ergativity

Object agreement appears only in the perfective transitive.

💬 Examples
राम किताब पढ़ता है
rām kitāb paṛhtā hai
Ram reads the book
📝 Present: agrees with the SUBJECT राम (m)
राम ने किताब पढ़ी
rām ne kitāb paṛhī
Ram read the book
📝 Past: agrees with the OBJECT किताब (f)
