Basic noun gender
Most feminine nouns end in taa marbuta (ة). Most other nouns are masculine.
A number of nouns are feminine by meaning or convention without the ة ending (e.g. body parts in pairs, many place names).
Adding ة to a masculine noun often forms its feminine counterpart.
