Adjective Agreement

Matching nouns and adjectives

Adjective follows its noun

Unlike English, the adjective comes after the noun and agrees in gender, number and definiteness.

💬 Examples
بَيت كَبير
bayt kabiir
a big house
📝 Adjective after noun, both indefinite
البَيت الكَبير
al-bayt al-kabiir
the big house
📝 Both carry ال
Gender agreement

A feminine noun takes a feminine adjective (usually +ة).

💬 Examples
سَيّارة جَميلة
sayyaara jamiila
a beautiful car
📝 Feminine noun + feminine adjective
وَلَد طَويل
walad ṭawiil
a tall boy
📝 Masculine agreement
Definiteness must match

If the noun is definite the adjective must be definite too; mismatch turns it into a sentence.

al-kitaab al-jadiid
the new book
📝 Phrase: both definite
الكِتاب جَديد
al-kitaab jadiid
The book is new
📝 Sentence: definite noun, indefinite predicate
