Word Order

SVO default but very flexible

Basic word order is Subject-Verb-Object

Greek defaults to SVO but allows great positional freedom.

💬 Examples
Ο Γιώργης πίνει καφέ.
o YORE-yis PEE-nee ka-FEH
George drinks coffee.

Η Μαρία αγαπά τον Νίκο.
ee ma-REE-a a-ga-PA ton NEE-ko
Maria loves Nikos.
📝 SVO word order
Elements can move for emphasis

Shifting a word to the front or end highlights it.

💬 Examples
Καφέ πίνει ο Γιώργης.
ka-FEH PEE-nee o YORE-yis
It is coffee that George drinks.
📝 object fronted for contrast
Τον Νίκο αγαπά η Μαρία.
ton NEE-ko a-ga-PA ee ma-REE-a
It is Nikos that Maria loves.
📝 fronted object with inversion
The verb can stand alone

The verb ending encodes person and number so a subject is not required.

💬 Examples
Πηγαίνω.
pee-YEH-no
I go / I am going.
📝 subject pronoun dropped
Τρώμε!
TRO-me
Let us eat!
📝 first person plural — no εμείς needed
