Subjunctive Mood (να)

να introduces the subjunctive

να introduces subjunctive clauses

να precedes a verb in the subjunctive (present or aorist form).

💬 Examples
Θέλω να φύγω.
THEH-lo na FEE-go
I want to leave.
📝 να + subjunctive = to leave
Ελπίζω να έρθεις.
el-PEE-zo na ER-this
I hope you will come.
📝 να + 2nd sg. subjunctive
να expresses wish, purpose and obligation

να can also function as a soft imperative or a purpose clause.

💬 Examples
Να πας στο γιατρό.
na pas sto yah-TRO
You should go to the doctor.
📝 να as soft command
Τρέχω να προλάβω.
I am running in order to make it in time.
📝 να + purpose
Present vs aorist after να

να + present = ongoing action; να + aorist = single completed action.

💬 Examples
Θέλω να γράφω κάθε μέρα.
I want to write every day.
📝 να + present = ongoing habit
Θέλω να γράψω ένα γράμμα.
I want to write a letter.
📝 να + aorist = one specific act
