Diminutives

Affective suffixes: -άκι, -ούλα, -ίτσα, -άκης

Diminutives are very common in spoken Greek

They convey smallness, affection or familiarity.

💬 Examples
σπίτι → σπιτάκι
SPEE-tee / spee-TAH-kee
house → little/cosy house
📝 -άκι (neuter diminutive)
καφές → καφεδάκι
coffee → a nice little coffee
📝 -άκι attached to καφέ-
Diminutives convey affection, not just small size

They are used in everyday speech for warmth and politeness.

💬 Examples
Έλα εδώ, μωράκι μου!
Come here, my little darling!
📝 μωράκι = affectionate diminutive
Θέλεις λίγο νεράκι;
Would you like a little water?
📝 νεράκι = polite/soft offer
Diminutives in -άκι follow neuter declension

Most diminutives in -άκι are neuter and decline accordingly.

💬 Examples
το σπιτάκι → του σπιτακιού → τα σπιτάκια
the little house (nom./gen./pl.)
📝 neuter -άκι declension
η κοριτσούλα → της κοριτσούλας
the little girl → of the little girl
📝 feminine -ούλα diminutive
