Regular -IR and -RE Verbs

Expand beyond -ER verbs to conjugate regular -IR and -RE verbs in the present tense.
Regular -IR verbs (second group) follow a consistent pattern. Common examples: finir choisir réussir grandir.
Regular -IR verbs are the second verb group.
finir = to finish / choisir = to choose / réussir = to succeed
To conjugate -IR verbs: remove -ir to get the stem then add: -is -is -it -issons -issez -issent.
IR verb endings: -is -is -it -issons -issez -issent.
-issons / -issez / -issent add -iss- in plural forms
Full conjugation of finir: je finis tu finis il/elle finit nous finissons vous finissez ils/elles finissent.

Not all -IR verbs are regular. Irregular -IR verbs like partir dormir sortir do NOT add -iss- in the plural.
Warning: many -IR verbs are irregular.
partir: je pars / nous partons (not partissons)
Regular -RE verbs are the third group. Common examples: vendre attendre répondre perdre.
Regular -RE verbs are the third verb group.
vendre = to sell / attendre = to wait / répondre = to answer
To conjugate -RE verbs: remove -re to get the stem then add: -s -s nothing -ons -ez -ent.
RE verb endings: -s -s (nothing) -ons -ez -ent.
-s / -s / — / -ons / -ez / -ent (third person singular = stem only)
Full conjugation of vendre: je vends tu vends il/elle vend nous vendons vous vendez ils/elles vendent.

The third person singular of -RE verbs has no ending added — just the stem with no extra letter.
Third person singular -RE = stem alone.
il vend / elle attend / on répond (no -t added)
Prendre (to take) is an important irregular -RE verb with its own pattern. Compounds like apprendre comprendre follow it.
Prendre is irregular — a key -RE verb.
je prends / tu prends / il prend / nous prenons / ils prennent
A useful trick: if a verb infinitive ends in -re and is not prendre/mettre/être assume it is regular and apply the standard endings.
Apply regular -RE endings to unknown -re verbs first.
