The Imparfait (Imperfect Past)

Use the imparfait to describe past habits ongoing states and background descriptions.
The imparfait (imperfect) describes past habits repeated actions and ongoing background states. It is not for completed one-time events.
Imparfait = habits states and background in the past.
Quand j'étais jeune j'habitais à Paris = When I was young I lived in Paris
Form the imparfait using the nous present tense stem + endings: -ais -ais -ait -ions -iez -aient.
Imparfait = nous stem + -ais -ais -ait -ions -iez -aient.
parler → nous parlons → parl- → je parlais

The only irregular imparfait is être: j'étais tu étais il/elle était nous étions vous étiez ils/elles étaient.
Être is the only irregular verb in the imparfait.
j'étais fatigué = I was tired / nous étions là = we were there
Use the imparfait to describe a past state or feeling: Il était heureux / J'avais faim.
Imparfait for past states emotions and feelings.
Il était triste / Elle avait peur / Je me sentais bien
Use the imparfait for habitual past actions — things done repeatedly: tous les jours chaque semaine autrefois.

The imparfait and passé composé are often used together: imparfait for background passé composé for the event.

Imparfait with time expressions: toujours (always) souvent (often) d'habitude (usually) autrefois (in the past).

Pendant que (while) introduces an imparfait clause when two past actions were simultaneous.
