The Pluperfect (le Plus-que-parfait)

Use the pluperfect to describe an action completed before another past action in narration and reported speech.
The pluperfect (plus-que-parfait) describes an action completed before another past action. Form: imparfait of auxiliary + past participle.
Plus-que-parfait = had done (before another past action).

j'avais mangé = I had eaten / elle était partie = she had left
Form it with the imparfait of avoir or être + past participle. The same verbs that use être in passé composé use être here too.
Same auxiliary rules as passé composé apply.

Use the pluperfect to show that one past action happened before another past action.

Quand je suis arrivé il était déjà parti = When I arrived he had already left
The pluperfect is often used with quand lorsque après que dès que to sequence past events.

In reported speech the passé composé becomes the plus-que-parfait when the reporting verb is past.

The pluperfect appears in si clauses to express an unreal past condition (si + PQP → past conditional).
Si + PQP → past conditional for unreal past.
Si j'avais su je n'aurais pas accepté = If I had known I wouldn't have accepted

Déjà (already) encore (still/yet) and ne…pas encore (not yet) are common adverbs used with the pluperfect.
