Indefinite Pronouns & Adjectives

Tout (m sg) toute (f sg) tous (m pl) toutes (f pl) means all/every/everything depending on use.

Tout = all / every / everything (agrees in gender/number).

Tout le monde = everyone / tous les jours = every day

On is the most common indefinite pronoun meaning one / people / we / you in a general sense. It takes il/elle verb form.

On = one/people/we/you (general) + singular verb.

On mange bien en France = People eat well in France

Chaque (each/every) is always singular and does not change for gender.

Chaque = each/every (invariable — always singular).

chaque jour / chaque personne / chaque élève

Chacun (m) / chacune (f) means each one and is used as a pronoun.

Chacun / chacune = each one (pronoun form).

Chacun a sa propre opinion = Each one has their own opinion

Certains (m pl) / certaines (f pl) means some / certain (ones) — referring to an unspecified subset.

Certains / certaines = some / certain ones.

Certains étudiants aiment les maths

Plusieurs means several and does not change for gender.

Plusieurs = several (invariable — no gender change).

J'ai plusieurs amis / Elle a plusieurs idées

Quelques means a few / some and is always plural. Quelqu'un means someone and quelque chose means something.

Quelques = a few / Quelqu'un = someone / Quelque chose = something.

quelques amis / quelqu'un frappe / quelque chose d'intéressant

N'importe + question word creates expressions meaning any at all: n'importe qui (anyone) n'importe quoi (anything) n'importe où (anywhere).

N'importe + qui/quoi/où/quand/comment = any at all.

N'importe qui peut venir / N'importe quoi!

Personne (no one) and rien (nothing) are used with ne as negative indefinite pronouns.

Personne / rien = no one / nothing (with ne).

Personne ne sait / Il ne dit rien

L'un l'autre (one another) and les uns les autres (each other — plural) express reciprocity.

L'un l'autre = one another / each other.

Ils se respectent l'un l'autre = They respect one another
